Introduction of Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV)

  1. The word “Hybrid” means a “Mix”, blending between two different things. In the automotive industry, hybrid is used to describe the powertrain of a vehicle.
  2. A Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) is a vehicle that is using two energy sources for propulsion, at least one of the energy sources being electrical energy.
  3. The vast majority of hybrid electric vehicles are using a combination of petrol (gasoline) engines and electric motor(s).
  4. A Hybrid vehicle is a vehicle that uses two or more distinct power sources to move the vehicle. The term most commonly refers to Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) which combine an internal combustion engine and one or more electric motors.
  5. Regenerative braking is one of the new technologies applied in modern HEVS used to improve fuel efficiency. Unlike frictional loss in conventional braking, regenerative braking converts the kinetic energy of a vehicle into electrical energy.
  6. In some HEVs, electrical energy is generated by spinning electrical generators by the means of an internal combustion engine. This is known as a motor-generator combination, used either recharge batteries or power electric drive motors directly.
  7. In the case of a start-stop system, the ICE is shut down at idle and restarted when needed increasing fuel economy and reducing idle emissions. HEV has a smaller IC engine thus producing lesser emissions compared to a similar-sized gasoline car.
  8. In 1997, the first modern hybrid electric car, the Toyota Prius, was sold in Japan.
  9. Two years later, the United States saw its first sale of a hybrid, the Honda Insight.
  10. The Honda Civic Hybrid, marked a radical change.
  11. Hybrids can play a significant role in solving major problems faced by the world,
  1. There are several types of electric vehicles out on the market, and understanding their differences. important, especially if you are considering purchasing one. There are three main types, and they are:
  • EV Electric Vehicle, also known as a Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV)
  • HEV-Hybrid Electric Vehicle and electric
  • PHEV-Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle
