Advantages and Disadvantages of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Advantages of Artificial Intelligence

The following are some main advantages of Artificial Intelligence:

  1. High Accuracy with fewer errors: AI machines or systems are prone to fewer errors and high accuracy as it takes decisions as on pre-experience or information.
  2. High-Speed: AI systems can be of very high speed and fast decision-making, and because of that AI systems can beat a chess champion in the Chess game.
  3. High reliability: AI machines are highly reliable and can perform the same action multiple times with high accuracy.
  4. Useful for risky areas: AI machines can be helpful in situations such as defusing a bomb, or exploring the ocean floor, where employing a human can be risky.
  5. Digital Assistant: AI can be very useful to provide digital assistance to the users such as AI technology is currently used by various E-commerce websites to show products as per customer requirements.
  6. Useful as a public utility: AI can be very useful for public utilities such as a self-driving cars which can make our journey safer and hassle-free, facial recognition for security purposes, Natural language processing to communicate with the human in human language, etc.
  7. Reduction in Human Error: The phrase “human error” was born because humans make mistakes from time to time. Computers, however, do not make these mistakes if they are programmed properly. With Artificial intelligence, the decisions are taken from the previously gathered information by applying a certain set of algorithms. So errors are reduced and the chance of reaching accuracy with a greater degree of precision is a possibility.
  8. Takes risks instead of Humans: This is one of the biggest advantages of Artificial intelligence. We can overcome many risky limitations of humans by developing an AI Robot which in turn can do risky things for us. Let it be going to mars, defusing a bomb, exploring the deepest parts of oceans, or mining for coal and oil, it can be used effectively in any kind of natural or man-made disaster.
  9. Available 24×7: An Average human will work for 4–6 hours a day excluding the breaks. Humans are built in such a way to get some time out for refreshing themselves and get ready for a new day of work and they even have weekly offed to stay intact with their work-life and personal life. But by using AI we can make machines work 24×7 without any breaks and they don’t even get bored, unlike humans.
  10. Digital Assistance: Some highly advanced organizations use digital assistants to interact with users which saves the need for human resources. Digital assistants are also used on many websites to provide things that users want. We can chat with them about what we are looking for. Some chatbots are designed in such a way that it’s become hard to determine whether we’re chatting with a chatbot or a human being.
  11. Faster Decisions: Using AI alongside other technologies we can make machines take decisions faster than a human and carry out actions quicker. While taking a decision humans will analyze many factors both emotionally and practically but an AI-powered machine works on what it is programmed for and delivers the results in a faster way.
  12. Daily Applications: Daily applications such as Apple’s Siri, Window’s Cortana, and Google’s OK Google are frequently used in our daily routine whether it is for searching a location, taking a selfie, making a phone call, replying to a mail, and many more.
  13. New Inventions: AI is powering many inventions in almost every domain which will help humans solve the majority of complex problems.
  14. Increased efficiency and speed: AI can process large amounts of data much faster than humans and make decisions based on that data.
  15. Improved accuracy: AI algorithms can identify patterns and make predictions with a high degree of accuracy, reducing the chance of human error.
  16. 24/7 availability: AI systems can operate continuously, without the need for breaks or rest, allowing for round-the-clock work.
  17. Cost-effectiveness: AI can automate many tasks, reducing the need for human labor and reducing labor costs.

Disadvantages of Artificial Intelligence

Every technology has some disadvantages, and the same goes for Artificial intelligence. Being so advantageous technology still, it has some disadvantages which we need to keep in our mind while creating an AI system. The following are the disadvantages of AI:

  1. High Cost: The hardware and software requirement of AI is very costly as it requires lots of maintenance to meet current world requirements.
  2. Can’t think out of the box: Even though we are making smarter machines with AI, but still they cannot work out of the box, as the robot will only do the work for which they are trained, or programmed.
  3. No feelings and emotions: AI machines can be an outstanding performer, but still it does not have the feeling so it cannot make any kind of emotional attachment to humans, and may sometime be harmful to users if the proper care is not taken.
  4. Increase dependency on machines: With the increment of technology, people are getting more dependent on devices and hence they are losing their mental capabilities.
  5. No Original Creativity: Humans are so creative and can imagine some new ideas but still AI machines cannot beat this power of human intelligence and cannot be creative and imaginative.
  6. Making Humans Lazy: AI is making humans lazy with its applications automating the majority of the work. Humans tend to get addicted to these inventions which can cause a problem for future generations.
  7. Unemployment: As AI is replacing the majority of repetitive tasks and other work with robots, human interference is becoming less which will cause a major problem in the employment standards. Every organization is looking to replace the minimum qualified individuals with AI robots that can do similar work with more efficiency.
  8. Lacking Out Box Thinking: Machines can perform only those tasks which they are designed or programmed to do, anything out of that they tend to crash or give irrelevant outputs which could be a major backdrop.
  9. Job loss: AI has the potential to automate many jobs, leading to job loss and increased unemployment.
  10. Bias and discrimination: AI systems can reflect and amplify the biases of their creators and trainers, leading to unfair and discriminatory outcomes.
  11. Lack of empathy: AI systems do not have emotions or empathy, making it difficult for them to understand the emotional context of situations and respond appropriately.
  12. Security and privacy concerns: AI systems can be vulnerable to hacking and cyberattacks, leading to potential breaches of sensitive information.
  13. Limited creativity: AI systems can only make decisions based on the data they have been trained on and can struggle with tasks that require original thought or creativity.

Advantages of Artificial Intelligence:

  1. Increased efficiency and speed in completing tasks
  2. Improved accuracy in decision-making and predictions
  3. Ability to process and analyze large amounts of data
  4. 24/7 availability
  5. Ability to perform dangerous or difficult tasks

Disadvantages of Artificial Intelligence:

  1. Job loss and economic disruption
  2. Bias and lack of transparency in decision making
  3. Lack of emotional intelligence and human empathy
  4. Dependence on technology and potential for system failure
  5. Ethical and privacy concerns surrounding data usage and storage.
